ST Applications

ST / CT Applications explained

Specialty Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a seven-year, run-through programme that culminates in the award of your Certificate of Completion Training (CCT) that allows you to apply for a consultant post.

ST posts are currently advertised once a year, around November, and interviews take place the following March. The recruitment process is a National one coordinated by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. All applications must be submitted using their online system through the ObsJobs website. To access this system you first need to register with the site: have your GMC details ready. The last three years have seen 100% of posts filled so it is an extremely competitive process.

The good news is that there is consistency: the same application form and interview system is used by all deaneries in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. You are only able to apply to one deanery however. If you are unsuccessful in your application to your preferred deanery you may be able to secure a place through the processing system in another deanery if they have available posts. This is not what you want so do not leave anything to chance.

Nick Raine-Fenning, our founder and Director, remembers his interview as if it was yesterday:

“It was my first interview and I was understandably nervous but quietly confident. This all changed in the interview as I was bombarded by questions I had not expected and I left feeling deflated and expecting the worst. Luckily this did not happen and I received a call later that afternoon to say I had been successful. I was overjoyed and met with friends to celebrate. I proudly told them that I was now officially ‘an obstetrician and gynaecologist’. There were a few more hurdles of course but this was the first and arguably the most important. Sadly not all of my colleagues were successful and as I said I feel I was lucky myself.”

Don’t leave it to chance yourself. Grab your destiny. Let us help you prepare your CV and application and then come on our Course to make sure you are 100% prepared for the interviews.

Sam Dobson did exactly this and was mentored by Nick and Ally Richardson, another Teale Fenning associate. Sam was not only successful but also obtained the highest score in the 2012/13 East Midlands deanery application. Sam says:

“I’d approached Nick to see if I could get involved in some research to strengthen my CV and application. I was amazed by the support I received. Nick introduced me to Ally, one of his research fellows, and we quickly set about a systematic review in early pregnancy and some related data analysis. They went through their own experiences and those of other trainees they had coached and helped me organize my portfolio and application form. Finally, we went through some interview techniques, using feedback from other trainees they had helped, and looked at hot topics in O&G. I arrived for my interview feeling confident but aware of the need to perform and of the opportunity to do well amongst my peers. The interview flew past and before I knew it I was on the way home. I was informed I had been successful shortly after and cannot wait to start my training. I may have got through without any help and direction but the experience showed me how important it is to prepare and to make sure you achieve what you want. My advice is to not leave anything to chance – there’s just too much at stake. We’ve devised this course to allow us to help you the same way I was helped. It’s priceless.”

“Thanks once again for helping me in passing my MRCOG. To be very honest you are the most inspiring teacher I have come across in my whole life… “
