What do you all think the key messages were from the recent OSCE Circuits Course(s)?

It became very clear to us that there are some simple rules you all need to remember and these include:

- be professional

- be confident and serious

- be compassionate
(care about the patient / role player as if they were your sister, wife, daughter, best friend etc without being too familiar)

- listen

- acknowledge
(repeat the patient's / role player's words)

- apologise
(remember you are responsible for the world's worries Wink )

- invite questions

- guarantee support

- finish strongly

- never, ever give up Smile

Simple advice? Absolutely ... and that's the key!

Wink

Looking at the marking schemes, that's all you need to do for a solid 14! And avoid saying something very wrong (i.e. give COCP to somebody who is breastfeeding or that the NHS is not paying for your C/S if it's your request)
Also: Avoid arguing with the examiner in the viva even if we think that he is totally wrong or outdated or arrogant or agressive or anything. Some of them may do it just to test us how we react! No matter how Greek I would be in real life, I wouldn't risk all this effort so far for a stupid argument on how usefull are the antisperm antibody levels for the investigation and treatment of male factor infertility..

Good points my friend.

This weekend and the first Circuit Course of the current group demonstrated once again how important it is to treat the role player as a real person who you deeply care for and want to help - as she is a family or personal friend.

Do not be distant.

Handy tip from my brother who works in the customer care industry and does a lot of teaching.

L - listen (don't just wait for the person to stop talking so you can ask your next question!)
E - empathy (if someone says they are having a rough time - ACKNOWLEDGE it!)
C - communicate.
A - action. (often our only thought!)

L.E.C.A. ( not the best acronym but there you go)

It's easy to think you are listening when you're not.
It's not easy to show empathy and most of us miss this.
Most of our time is spent on the C and A, such that sometimes we hardly let the patient speak at all!!

Practice on non-medics - they will soon tell you where you're going wrong! Wink

I like it but agree the acronym is not great!

I think the need to listen and acknowledge came through loud and clear during the Circuits Course.

Most people think they are listening and being sympathetic but you can see the groans and cringes on the observers faces when they have their turn. We always think we are doing things but you need an independent person to tell you the truth - that's where we come in.

I like the L.E.C.A. tip too but can I add a F somewhere? for Forget that it is an exam! Which I think is the most difficult task even for the best actor! Because we have to be like actors/actresses that day..
