Having spent the weekend doing the OSCE Theory Course with you all I decided to have a look for some resources that may help you explain a fetal condition to an expectant parent(s).

Here is my general advice on what you should cover. I refer to 'condition A' where this could represent any ultrasound finding or even syndrome.

What is 'condition A'?

Outline the condition

Describe how the condition may vary if this applies

What causes 'condition A'?

Tell them what we think may be the cause - often we do not know

Explain if it relates to something that happends during early pregancy - often this is not the case

Are there any associated abnormalities - structural or chromosomal

Treatment options

Discuss the treatment options

Discuss any alternative treatments if there are any

Discuss the risks associated with these options

What is the outlook for children with 'condition A'?

Discuss the general prognosis and the potential extremes

Say that this is hard to predict - often impossible

Can 'condition A' recur?

Discuss recurrence rates and any preventative measures or methods for early detection

Offer support

This should be both personal from you and your team and also by informing the couple about appropriate support groups
