Dear SS,
Please do not despair. The MRCOG is a hard exam, but I am sure we will be able to help. You may well have had a break down of your marks. If so were there any areas of weakness?
You will see for our website that we offer comprehensive courses to cover all bits of the exam. My best advice is to address the areas of weakness, that for most candidates is the written exam. Our essay writing technique and practice essay courses are specifically designed for this.
It is also essential that you have a comprehensive set of (correct) answers to the MCQ Past Paper book that you understand. Our Past Paper Course covers the whole book and provides evidence-based answers to each and every question. This ensures that you are learning about the subject areas rather than just having a true / false answer. 60% or more are new questions which you wil not be able to answer unless you have read around the topics and this is what we do on the Past Paper and O&G in 48 Hours Courses.
Finally, the new EMQs seemed to be very difficult. Our new EMQ Course seems to be pretty exam comparable from the feedback we have had and the next one will be based on and cover the questions that have just come up (or as close to these as we can get from what we have been told).
If you have the time the new ABC in O&G Course is a weeks course in which we cover EMQs, MCQs, and the Past Paper book all supported by a detailed coursebook.
I know this seems like a lot of courses and it is. However, we feel each course offers something different and something important or we would not run them.
I hope this helps. _________________ Jullien Brady B.Sc. MB.BS. MRCOG.

Dear SS,
I know how you feel. I also failed the written in March but fortunately got thru in Sept (still the OSCE to go though). The Teale Fenning team helped me loads and I think that if there is one course you would choose to go to it would be the essay technique course.
However, you still need to practice, practice, practice loads of essays, MCQs and the dreaded EMQs. The thing that really helped me the most this time is my study group. 3 of us got together and discussed the questions (Past Papers etc). It helps cos that means 3 brains are working instead of 1; also, when you are tired or lazy, the other 2 will push you along.
All the best for your preparation. hope my 2 cents helped... _________________ Mei Lin HOO

Would it make you feel better if I told you that I have NEVER worked in the UK? My whole study group was based in Malaysia and my UK experience was with Teale Fenning. _________________ Mei Lin HOO

This is very important advice and the key to getting through I feel.
Obviously it is best if you find a colleague to study with near you but why don;t you use the Forum. The post count is slowly starting to rise and if you try and contribute by posting a few questions and, subsequently, answering these this will encourage others to do the same.
If you want a dedicated person or two with whom you can work why not request this in the "Study Buddy Scheme"? |

Just post there asking if anyone wants to team up with you and write some essays and make up a few EMQs and MCQs.
I am sure there are people doing this and as Mei Lin says 'two heads are better than one'.
The way I see it is that if you write an essay on placenta praevia and a colleague writes one on placental abruption then you have gained two essays for doing the work for just one.
When you revise for placenta praevia you can also write MCQs from whichever guideline or reference source you use. You can test your colleague on these and she / he can test you on the ones they do for abruption.
If you do a series of topics that have a similar background (i.e. bleeding in pregnancy, abdo pain in pregnancy etc) you can eventually make up an EMQ as well!!
If I was after a partner or 'study buddy' I think I would try and write a few essays or MCQs etc (see what we have done in the other Forums) and post them here. That way people can see you are keen. One would imagine the better your questions and the more questios you write the more partners / buddies you will get!
Essentially the Forum aims to do thsi anyway but on a large scale. Some people will prefer to work in smaller groups.
Whatever you do please post the results here and I will try and make some helpful comments as will all the Teale Fenning team |
