concerning fibroids, myomectomy in women with otherwise unexplained infertility results in a pregnacy rate of around 50%? shouldnt it be false? |

TRUE
Surprise , Surprise ...
ref -- Clinical review. 723 BMJ Vol 327 27 Sept 2003
Vercellini P, Maddalena S, De Giotgi O, Aimi G, Crosignani PG. Abdominal myomectomy for infertility: a comprehensive review. Hum Reprod, 1998;13:873
The success rate of a subsequent spontaneous conception after a hysteroscopic, abdominal, or a laparoscopic myomectomy is about 60% if infertility was the sole reason for the surgery. _________________ Dr Miss. Raj Walavalkar MBBS MRCOG

Nice work Raj - I thought the figures made sense and was going to say true anyway.
Think about the question.
There is a lot of recent evidence that has confirmed even intramural (not just sub-mucosal) fibroids reduce fertility. We know less about the effect of treatment but myomectomy is an acceptable and effective treatment for women with unexplained subfertility with sub-mucosal and intra-mural fibroids. _________________ "Teale Fenning Medical Education" delivering evidence-based, exam-orientated learning since 1997 |
