Everyone is still getting excited about domestic violence.
There appears to be some confusion about when to ask and how to ask.
Here are a few rules:
1. ask all women at booking
2. ask women at other times if there are indicators ...
| Confidential Enquiry wrote: | Indicators of domestic violence, relevant to maternity care
• Late booking
• Poor or non-attendance at antenatal clinics
• Repeat attendance at antenatal clinics, the general practitioner’s surgery or hospital accident and emergency department for minor injuries or trivial or non-existent complaints
• Repeat presentation with depression, anxiety, self-harm and psychosomatic symptoms
• Minimalisation of signs of violence on the body
• Poor obstetric history
• Unexplained admissions
• Non-compliance with treatment regimens/early self discharge from hospital
• The constant presence of partner at examinations, who may answer all the questions for her and be unwilling to leave the room
• The woman appears evasive or reluctant to speak or disagree in front of her partner. |
Build this into your social history and only ask after you have built some rapport.
How do you ask?
You simply say "I'm sorry but I have to ask you - does your partner abuse you in anyway, either physcially or emotionally". _________________ "Teale Fenning Medical Education" delivering evidence-based, exam-orientated learning since 1997 |

Exactly - she always seems to be called Stacey and he is often Billy
Do not presume a station with Stacey and Billy means there is domestric violence however and equally do not exclude it in a middle class couple.
Be great to have to see a Consultant Obstetrician who was subject to domestic violence Why not? _________________ "Teale Fenning Medical Education" delivering evidence-based, exam-orientated learning since 1997 |
