dear all,

found these great tips on a site called as www.inspirechange.com

1. What is your Unique Selling Point (USP)?
2. Think always of the person reading your CV
3. Readable typeface (Arial, Times, Verdana or Courier)
4. Lay it out in easy to read format and insert your own page breaks
5. Include your interests
6. Keep it up to date and on your P.C. Particularly the ‘properties’
7. Use Bullet Points where appropriate
8. Include plenty of white space
9. Show it to your referees
10. Use positive, action words
11. Print on a good quality paper (90 gsm+) using a laser or inkjet printer
12. No larger than 12 point font
13. If submitting by email ideally submit as a pdf (Adobe file)
14. Number the pages
15. Try Resume Wizard in MS Word
16. Say what you achieved, not just what you did
17. Stress the positive side of what you’ve done
18. Use plain English, not clever words
19. Update and tailor it for each new application
20. Don’t just list your audits: close the loop and tell us what was achieved

hope these help..

All good points Raj

Having just looked through 20 CVs to short list for our new research fellow I remembered how important it is to address the job description and requirments and toi make this crystal clear. I can still not tell you if 4 or 5 of the applicants met the specificed criteria!

Look at the job description which contains required and desired attributes. Address these in the first or second page. You can even copy these requirements down and answer each individually. This will be a welcome change for the short listers who will be delighted to have a transparent application.

When you short list you do not read every single part of the CV - you skim read and concentrate on the key areas. Make these stand out.

The other thing I noticed was the lack of non-clinical activities or any real substantial qualifications in teaching, administration, and research. Everyone put down several audits which is good and necessary but many people did not describe the audit, its findings and eventual effect, or their role in it - this is essential. Did it change practice? Was it re-audited?

Teaching - it is not enough to say you enjoy it! This is what 99% of people write as well as saying they are good communicators, hard working, good team workers, motivated, etc. Anyone can say this - it means nothing! Give examples of how this is true. When describing teaching drop in some trendy terms such as deep learning, problem- based learning, appraisal etc and show how you have incorporated this into your teaching. Make sure you have had your teaching assessed.

Administration - get on some committees. Organising rotas is not enough - everyone does this. Set up a journal club or forum.

Research - publish. Publish anything! I can guarantee that there will be academics in your hospital with desks full of data that need compiling, analysing, charting etc. Ask and ask again. Write a mini-review and show it to someone. If you write well you can turn these into publications somewhere. It is all about writing - if you came to me with a good piece of evidence-based work that had been carefully considered I am more likely to ask you do write something for me. We are always asked to write reviews and book chapters so there will be opportunities. make sure you are available and that your consultants know you are keen - pester them and ask every week for work.
