DCT detects presence of antibodies on the red cells from the patient- True
I thought DCT is for newborns. Do they mean mother or baby in the question?

It doesn't matter. Any patient can have antibodies to their red blood cells, some drugs can cause the production of autoantibodies. DCT is used in peads for the newborn.

The direct Coombs test is used to detect if antibodies or complement system factors have bound to RBC surface antigens in vivo.

hence can be done in a baby or adult, human or monkey... doesn't matter.

A positive Coombs test indicates that an immune mechanism is attacking the patient's own RBC's. The mechanism could be autoimmunity, alloimmunity or a drug-induced immune-mediated mechanism.

you'll get positive direct coombs test in ....

Hemolytic disease of the newborn
Rhesus D hemolytic disease of the newborn
ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn
Anti-Kell hemolytic disease of the newborn
Alloimmune haemolytic transfusion reactions
Systemic lupus erythematosus
Evans' syndrome = antiplatelet antibodies and haemolytic antibodies
Infectious mononucleosis
Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria
Drug induced in -- Methyl Dopa and Penicillin

I'm answering TRUE to your MCQ
Smile

The indirect Coombs test is used to detect in-vitro antibody-antigen reactions.

It is used to detect very low concentrations of antibodies present in a patient's plasma/serum prior to a blood transfusion.

In obstetrics, it is used to screen pregnant women for antibodies that may cause hemolytic disease of the newborn. It can also be used for compatibility testing, antibody identification, RBC phenotyping, and titration studies.

Very Happy

Excellent answer Raj

It was on the tip of my tongue but would have needed some detailed 'looking up' to answer Razz
