Ovarian causes of hirsutism

PCOS is the most common cause

Ovarian neoplasms

Luteoma of pregnancy

Arrhenoblastomas

Leydig cell tumors

Hilar cell tumors

Thecal cell tumors

Familial hirsutism

Drug-induced hirsutism

phenytoin,
minoxidil,
diazoxide,
cyclosporine,
streptomycin,
psoralen,
penicillamine,
high-dose corticosteroids,
metyrapone,
phenothiazines,
acetazolamide,
hexachlorobenzene

Adrenal causes of hirsutism

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia

Late-onset CAH

Hirsutism and oligomenorrhea suggest 21-hydroxylase deficiency

3 beta-, 11-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficiency (elevated 3 beta-, 11-hydroxysteroid levels),

Cushing syndrome

Other causes

anorexia nervosa,
acromegaly, hypothyroidism,
hyperprolactinemia,
porphyria.

Idiopathic hirsutism

Another great list Raj - thanks Very Happy

What we realy need is some percentages for these so we can really get a feel for the most common causes - this will really help planning the answers to the essay questions especially now that you have limited space!

It would also be useful to know which of those drugs cause hirsutism and which cause hypertrichosis as these are different pathophysiological processes if I remember correctly. I may have something on this somewhere.
