hi shama,
caesarean section are categorised depending on the urgency needed at delivery.
the NICE guidelines give 4 categories ---
1. immediate threat to the life of the woman or fetus
2. maternal or fetal compromise which is not immediately life-threatening
3. no maternal or fetal compromise but needs early delivery
4. delivery timed to suit woman or staff i.e. planned / elective
hope this helps.

Thanks a lot Raj.I was under the wrong impression that grading of CS is different from the classification of urgency.

Do you have the times for these Raj?
I mean how long from decision to delivery. _________________ "Teale Fenning Medical Education" delivering evidence-based, exam-orientated learning since 1997 |

Cat 1 -- decision to deli time less than 30 mins.
Cat 2 -- in less than 45 mins
Cat 3 -- As soon as / when possible, without undue delay.
Cat 4 -- At patient's and surgeon's convenience, preferable before an SVD

Raj, Where are these times from? I thought NICE didn't specify times.
On a seperate note, How helpful do you think this categorisation is? I know it's better than nothing but I still say things like "a quick category 2" and I guess that's why NICE doesn't give time (or do they?) |

cat 1 and 2 are time cutoff standards -- of NHS perinatal institute review of CS sentinel audit,
cat 3 and 4 -- are 'UK standard practice' cutoff
most documents that one comes across take these cutoffs as standard guideline. will read around and see if i find more
