I was wondering which books you would recommend for Part 1 revision.
I am writing the new courses for next year and want to make sure I include all the top information from the main texts.
The RCOG recommend the following:
Physiology
Review of Medical Physiology (22nd edition)
General
Basic Science in Obstetrics and Gynaecology - a textbook for the MRCOG part 1
Pathology
General and Systemic Pathology (4th edition)
Robbins Basic Pathology (7th edition)
Pharmacology
Lecture Notes: Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Clinical Pharmacology (9th edition)
Reproduction & Endocrinology
Essential Reproduction (5th edition)
Clinical Gynecologic Endocrinology and Infertility (7th edition)
Biochemistry
Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry (27th edition)
Biochemistry (6th edition)
Microbiology
Medical Microbiology (5th edition)
Embryology
Langman's Medical Embryology (10th edition)
Human Embryology (3rd edition)
Immunology
Roitt's Essential Immunology (Eleventh edition)
Genetics
ABC of Clinical Genetics (3rd edition)
Essential Medical Genetics (5th edition)
Statistics
Introduction to Medical Statistics (3rd edition)
What do you think of their list?
Bit short on anatomy!
Any must haves or any that you think are best avoided? _________________ "Teale Fenning Medical Education" delivering evidence-based, exam-orientated learning since 1997 |

I simply used two TEXT books.. both general books~: Tim Chard and then the general book for MRCOG: Basic Science in Obstetrics and gynaecology - a textbook for MRCOG Part 1.
I think the whole thing is MCQ practice... TF should be good at that!
I then had three or for past paper MCQ books. I think the college have published some (like the Part 2 MCQ book) so this is going to be crucial.
RCOG course was good in exposing us to more of the questions from the bank as their own book wasnt published at this time.
I honestly feel time is wasted reading specialist books.. the general ones give enough info to answer most questions and past papers and answers are the way to revise quickly and easily! |

I agree with Richard
I studied most of your listed texts the first time, forgot to practice MCQ's and promptly saw my bottom
Second time round I just read Chard etc and practiced heaps of MCQ's and passed. _________________ Bronwyn Bell

Practice makes perfect as they say!
We are working on our Part 1 Course at present and will hopefully have some on line exams soon as well.
I have delayed the launch of the course though as there may be changes in the Exam soon ???? EMQs and a more clinical base to it. |

I have to echo Bronwyn and Richard, the Past Papers Book from RCOG is important cos about 1/3 of questions come directly from there if not more. If you count the permutations of questions that come up, then about 40% of the paper is from that book. Saying that, I found I had to read Ganong Physiology (lots of questions from there), Michael de Swiet's Basic Sciences in O+G (this was my base book and I read more in depth into the subjects around it). MCQ practice is essential _________________ Mei Lin HOO

Yes ... have a look in the Part 2 related Forums below this one
Plan ahead and revise slowly. Concentrate on your essays and go a course early to ensure you are doing this correctly.
I know a good one if you are interested _________________ "Teale Fenning Medical Education" delivering evidence-based, exam-orientated learning since 1997 |
