The RCOG have announced big changes to the DRCOG Examination from October 2007.
A Working Party decided the should reflect "Women's Health care as applied to the General Practitioner in the UK" and have modifed the Exam accordingly. Most importantly, they have reduced the volume of information that will be required.
The College go on to say ...
| RCOG wrote: | The outgoing curriculum was vast and effectively meant that candidates were required to understand all aspects of obstetrics and gynaecology, neonatology, genito-urinary medicine and contraception.
The new curriculum and syllabus have narrowed the domains of knowledge required to those areas of Women's Health appropriate to a UK-based GP.
For example, we would no longer expect you to be able to interpret a CTG, but we would expect you to be able to counsel antenatal patients as to how and why they may be offered intra-partum fetal surveillance. |
Changes will not apply until after the April 2007 examination. Please note therefore that from October 2007, the new DRCOG examination format will be a single three-hour written paper with no OSCE.
In addition to the classic MCQ, the new exam will feature Extended Matching Questions (EMQs) and a "Best of five" MCQ where the candidate is forced to chose the single most appropriate answer from a list of five options.
MCQ 40 five-part questions (200 individual question items)
MCQ 5s 15-20 Best of five MCQ
EMQ 10-12 three-part questions (30-36 individual questions items)
The new curriculum and syllabus will be released following the April 2007 DRCOG examination. The precise numbers of EMQ, MCQ and 'best of 5' questions will be released at the same time on the College website along with some sample questions in the new formats.

This has all been confirmed in todays RCOG News ...

Should be a very different exam from now on therefore and one which I presume will require more knowledge.
