The ST 1 working party report looking at Basic Specialty Training was presented and approved by the Council on Friday 19th May. The summary of the report is as follows:

Quote:
Training in obstetrics and gynaecology will be after the foundation years (F1 & F2) and will last seven years (ST1 to ST7).

Recruitment into ST1 will follow an application process shortlisting eligible candidates followed by selection in individual Deaneries.

At the end of ST1 & ST2 the trainee should be able to manage most common obstetric and gynaecological emergencies and will be on call at nights.

The trainee must pass the MRCOG Part 1 to proceed from ST2 to ST3 and Part II to proceed from ST5 to ST6.

The RCOG continues to work with the specialist societies to develop advanced training skills modules (ATSM) in ST6 & ST7
.

The curriculum designed by the RCOG covers the training from ST1 to ST7. It consists of several modules. A logbook, RITA process, and an assessment process will evaluate progress.

The Deaneries and training programme directors will be responsible for successful implementation of the curriculum which is under review by the PMETB. The PMETB has taken over the role of quality assurance for training and will conduct Deanery-based multidisciplinary team visits.

The RCOG is uncertain about the robustness of such visits to assess quality of training and will continue to help maintain the high standards of O&G education and training by working with local Deaneries with some central coordination from the College.

The RCOG Council meeting in Nov 2006 admitted that there are complexities in the transition to the new system.

They did, however, confirm that the requirements of ST1 – 3 have been finalised and that the new Medical Training Scheme will allow each student to apply to 4 different deaneries.

RCOG will organise a workshop with the deaneries to help in the selection process and hopefully to produce a harmonised process. More details are available on the MMC website.
