I'm sure everybody knows by now that come August that for new ST 6 and 7's SSM's are being replaced by ATSM's. In the past it was considered to be useful, but not compulsory to obtain 2 SSm's by the time you obtained your CCT. With the new training programme it's not a question of number of ATSM's but rather the number of credit points available for each one. It will now be compulsory to obtain a set number of credit points ( the number of which hasn't been made public yet) in order to obtain your CCT. The credits seem to be weighted more heavily towards obstetric topics and there will be a number of ATSM's(currently all obstetric!) that will be in a group where it will be compulsory to choose at least one.
The other thing that we've been told is that you may not have a preceptor in that particular topic based at your local hospital, rather there may only be one in the region who will oversee your training.
Given the difficulties that some trainees have had with trying to complete their SSM's we wait to see how the new system is going to be implemented
